Where are you better off in a head-on crash? A modern-day 5* Euro NCAP car, or an old banger that’s built like a tank?

GO VOLVO!
I think …
GO VOLVO!
I think there’s something spoky with this video… The volvo should just plow the Renault in two pieces, or that’s what I wanted at least…

the volvo looks better even after :O
By nanth85 on Jan 20, 2010
the engine is …
the engine is removed from the volvo…. LOL… Remove the engine from the modus and the volvo punches through to the trunk.
A very high amount of energy is absorbed by the engine and its mounts so this is not a fair test.

i think that volvo …
i think that volvo is doing very well.. this volvo is old.. but modus is new.. so make a conclusion
By Benjimindle on Jan 20, 2010
that modus is …
that modus is operating on the same saftey principle as 4×4’s, build the frame as strong as possible, forcing the other car to absorb your kinetic energy as well as its own. basically, it is designed to kill the person in the other car, rather than absorb the collision.
the Volvo, on the other hand, uses a long bonnet and crumple zone to protect both drivers.
and the modus is ugly.

Just goes to show …
Just goes to show how many advances there have been in recent years. Volvos were famously designed to crumple like that ‘crumple zones front and rear’ was one of their key safety messages, as it absorbs the kinetic energy. But obviously many modern cars are safer still.

Both cars are …
Both cars are without engine. The test is about the building quality of the body. See a slightly different version of this test on “123video”. At least in this version you can see both crossbars were in and both engines were out.

i agree with you CptSchmidt i had a 1985 volvo 740 gle and i personally hit two telephone poles trying to drift it… stupid i know but i rebounded off of both of them and managed to only lose one blinker lens lol great cars alltogether. i would take another volvo any day!!!

fake…
By CptSchmidt on Jan 20, 2010
They took the …
They took the engine out of the Volvo. They also took the aluminum front crossbar. That is evidenced by the footage at 2:01. The cross bar would have either broken out of the left side of the Volvo’s bumper or it would have torn through the Renault. As you can see, there is no crossbar because neither happens.
At 2:15, you can tell the guy is reading something that you know Renault paid him to say. It sounds more like a Renault press-release than anything else.

Whoever has a Volvo …
Whoever has a Volvo sell it now before it´s too late…before they transform such a fine brand into a pitiful chinese POS car. Too bad there was not somebody else than Geely with the big pockets to keep Volvo in good hands.
