In 2009, 60% of car loans will be paid off, does that mean people will rush to buy new cars?

A car salesman told me there are 4 to 5 year car buying peaks, the last peak in car sales were from the years 2005 and 2006.
he said most car loans will be paid off in 2009 and 2010
and in those same years they are expecting another peak in new car sales.
any truth in that?

I have been in the business for 10 years most people try and trade after 3 years. The current popularity of 72 month and even 84 month finance will change that. We get a steady flow of customer for the most part until like now the economy get shaky then we slow down. The 2005/2006 spree was caused by low rates and big sales(GM’s first employee price sale). I hope it does turn but I wont hold my breath

Would a car dealer take two cars in trade in for more off on one new car?

I have two old cars, but I only need to buy one new one.
I wondered with the economy as bad as it is. Would a car dealer ever consider taking two old cars both 10 years old as trade in on the new car? Is there any car salesmen in the audience here?

Some may, depending on the type and condition of the cars and what car you want to buy. The only way to find out is ask. However I wouldn’t tell them I had a trade until I had an agreed on price on the new one. Then ask them and you’ll find out how much you’re getting for the trades. If you go in there with the trades up front you never really know whether they really gave you anything for your car(s) or not.

How green is scrapping an old car and buying a new one?

People who own cars that have high c02 emissions are going to be taxed more under the guise of a ‘green tax to encourage green behaviour’.

The only logic here is that the government want people to scrap their old cars and buy new lower emission ones.

How green is it to scrap a perfectly good car and replace it with a new one?

Where would there be figures/data for this?

No idea if there are any figures for this, but recycling of cars is down to a pretty good fine art these days, with something like 80-95% of material reclaimed.

Of course, reclaiming the materials and building the new car also takes masses of energy, so it all depends on how much you use the car and how close you were to the tax brackets.

In the short term this effect of people scrapping ‘good’ cars for new cars is obviously harmful, but 10 years down the line it will have almost certainly been a net saving measure.

Do new cars sold in Mexico for the Mexican market have airbags?

Since 1998, in the USA, all new cars have dual front airbags, but what about Mexico? Do new cars sold there have airbags? Do some and some don’t? Does the Mexican government have any auto safety laws?

Airbags are not mandatory, but most cars do have them for almost 10 years now…. cheaper versions of the same cars may not have them while the more equipped ones do
