At the launch of the 2010 Toyota Prius, Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A., tells us, “We’ll face two challenges when the Prius goes on sale: the economy and the 2010 Honda Insight.
“The good news for consumers is that the market has plenty of room for both the Prius and Insight in their respective segments,” Carter adds. “Based on our 2010 projections, the Prius can achieve a theoretical 7 percent share of the industry’s largest segment — midsize sedans. In the second-ranked compact class, the Insight could achieve a 5 percent market share.”
So it’ll be a nice, peaceful coexistence for these two hybrid cars that just happen to look almost exactly like each other. Don’t believe that? Neither do we.
As the U.S. economy continues its topsy-turvy performance, nobody’s market share is safe. So it actually matters which hybrid car is better — the 2010 Honda Insight, which went on sale March 24, or the 2010 Toyota Prius, which hits dealers in late May.
The Insight has already proven itself against the 2009 Prius. But now that the 2010 Toyota Prius has appeared with its bigger engine, all-new chassis and 50-mpg EPA-combined fuel economy rating, it is a much tougher hybrid cookie (bursting with high-fiber organic oats and fair-trade chocolate chips!).

Youve probably noticed lots of good deals on new cars these days.
Even the federal government has a special offer.
Buy a new car between February 16th and December 31st of 2009, and youll probably get to deduct the cars sales tax on your tax return. The same deal applies if you buy a small truck — or a not-so small SUV or motor home . a even a motorcycle.
Heres how it works:
Lets say you buy a car for $28,000 about the national average price for new cars. If you pay 6 percent sales tax, thats $1,680. And that $1,680 can be written off on your tax return.
So whats that worth?
Most middle-class folks would save between $250 and $420.
Remember:
You must buy a new car, used cars dont count
Higher-income taxpayers wont qualify, but a married couple can earn more than a quarter of a million dollars before having to worry about losing this break.
You can take the deduction even if you file a simple tax return and claim the standard deduction.
You can spend as much as you want, but you only get to deduct the tax on the first $49,500 of the purchase price of each new car you buy this year.
And, finally, if you normally itemize and deduct sales taxes instead of state income taxes, this new deduction doesnt give you anything extra.
The tax write off isnt enough to send people scurrying to a dealership to buy a new car.
But it certainly can make a good deal even better.

So what does an auto show look like in the midst of one of the worst markets in history? Not so bad, actually. The 2009 New York Auto Show is looking like it will finish the season strong, with a handful of notable world debuts along with a dozen or so North American firsts.
Think SUVs are dead? Well, not quite. Acura, GMC and Land Rover have all come up with what they think are the next generation of SUVs. Smaller, more nimble and less painful at the pump, all-new vehicles from all three manufacturers will be making their world debuts in New York.
If you’re still not buying into the efficient, high-performance SUV thing, then look for the new 2010 Subaru Legacy. It’ll be shown for the first time in New York and is likely to have all the utility you’ll ever need. And for those who couldn’t care less about utility, Nissan will display the convertible version of its new 370Z coupe. Coverage starts April 8 with video, blogs and photos from the show floor.

If it ain’t broke… Honda will still find a way to fix it. The current version of the Fit is a huge hit having enjoyed a 78.5 percent sales increase over the same period last year. And while this model has only been on sale since 2007 the same platform has been offered in Japan since 2001. After 8 years on sale even a car as fine as the Fit is due for an update. But is the new 2009 Fit even more fit than ever or has it become portly with its advancing age like the bulbous second gen xB?
