Friday, January 29th, 2010I want to buy a car – old or new it doesn’t matter at all. All I want to know that how should I judge the right vehicle which could rather be a value for money to me. Please share tips related to what kind of things I should do a due diligence on before buying a car.
Read Consumers Report Car Buying issue, excellent info on new and used cars. If u r going for a used car, subscribe to Carfax, there u get info on where the car came from, if ever in a reported collision, mileage, how many owners.etc. Cost is reasonable for 30 days of unlimited usage, all u need is the vin number of the vehicle u r interested in. A new car is ur decision in taste and preference, but Consumers Report test drives all vehicles and u get their data. They also have the frequency of repairs and problems with used cars. how much would you price a brand new car seat at a yard sale?

I have to agree with Livelaugh – most people won’t buy a car seat at a garage sale, even if you say it’s never been used.
I know that most good will stores won’t even take them as a donation. Not sure about a consignment shop. I think it has to do with liability.
Is it new enough (read: recent model) you can try to figure out where it was purchased and try to return it, even if you only get a partial refund?
How insurance coverage work for new a car ?

I intend to buy a car by the end of this month on the weekend (I work from Monday to Friday and do not want to skip working).
I will use my old car for trade-in. And I will switch my current insurance on to the new car. Since it all will be happening on the weekend (my insurance office closed), I will have to switch the insurance on Monday.
If something happen to the new car before the insurance switched (sometime before Monday), who will cover the car ?
Any advice ? Thank you…
If you drive the car without insurance, and something happens, it’s not covered.
Call your agent and tell him you are buying a new car. If you can get the VIN in advance of the sale, it would be helpful. Ask him to get you covered before you drive it. He should be able to help.
How does a new hire go about getting car financing?
Sunday, January 24th, 2010I just graduated from university with a BS degree and will begin work in mid-August. I need to buy a car before then and need financing. The conundrum is that I am planning to drive myself to the new city I will be in, which means I will be signing my lease after I buy the car.
Am I technically employed for the purpose of a loan application? Is there any special way for new hires to go about loan applications?
No just apply like normal & ask if they have a first time car buyer discount.

It varies by city.
You cannot buy a car in another city with a lower tax rate to avoid the higher rate in your city.
The car dealer will ask you where you live and you still have to pay the full tax for your city. I know, it sucks. But many cities are going broke so they want their fair share.

If you buy a car and it eventually dies after tons of miles why do people buy new cars instead of a new engine?
If engines cost the same as a new car then I would understand.
Well, you see there are many parts of a car that get damaged and worn out. Not just the engine!
If all you had to do was replace your engine and the car would keep working, then we’d all have a lot more cash in out pocket!

Depends. If you’re asking because you’re looking to buy a car on the internet and you’ve gotten that story from the "seller" — run for the hills. Do not proceed, it is a CLASSIC scam.
However, if you’re asking because you want to know for yourself or a friend, then that’s a decision you need to make for yourself. Can the car be transported to the new location? Is the new place in the US or does the car not meet international specs? Is it just too expensive or inconvenient to keep?

Saturday, November 14th, 2009I am thinking about buying a car from a auto auction. What is the average price or a range in which cars are usually sold at an auction for? I just want a basic car to get me from point a to point b.
That depends on year/make/model/mileage/condition. Most public auctions for vehicles are not retail quality. The primary source of buyers for these auctions are people that know enough about cars to perform whatever maintenance that is required to get them to run. Is isn’t unheard of to buy a car for $200 or less. But the old saying is true "you get what you pay for." So don’t expect to buy a creme puff. What you buy probably wont even pass emissions tests. Be prepared to spend at least an additional $500 to make it legal.
