Question by Tim T: Buying a new car has changed — How do you negotiate now?
I’ve gone to a couple of dealerships and have tried contacting dealers over the Internet. All of the prices I’m getting from all of these locations are within $ 100 of each other. Nobody is willing to negotiate. I recall the days when you could really “wheel and deal” on cars, getting some good discounts if you were willing to haggle.

Are the days of haggling over? Or is there a new rulebook that I should follow to get a better deal?

the prices have gotten so low to the cost now that there isnt a lot of room, aside from end of year clearances. the best deals I have gotten are into the next year when last year’s models are still rotting on lots halfway through the current year’s production cycle. slim picking then though…btu you an get a good deal. otherwise, family memebers have used carsdirect.com. my dad saved some money there. there are other car selling sites as well. good luck!

Question by : “Buying” a car from a friend?
We are being given a car by my husbands step-grandmother. I say we need to have her write a letter reading that we bought it and have her sign it cause maybe we might get taxed for the gift or when we go to the DMV they will want proof we bought it and didn’t “steal” the pink slip and car. My husband says we just need the pink slip to change ownership. Who’s correct? Are both correct? BTW, we live in CA.

Thanks Faye. But, does anyone know if this can get taxed by the IRS or does it have to be over a certain amount to qualify as a non-gift? I am clueless, but obviously want to cover myself. Thanks again Faye.

Question by : What is the difference between “Selling Price” and “Retail Price” when buying a used car?
I am shopping for a used car and have found one online I am interested in. On the website it has two prices listed. One is the retail price, $ 16995, and the other is the selling price, $ 13588. Can someone please tell me what the difference is, and how to go about making sure I get the lowest price?

In this case it probably means the “suggested retail price” versus the “asking price”. It is just another way people try to make their car look like a good deal.

Double check all prices with kelly blue book BEFORE talking with the seller so you have a good knowledge base going in. Also check consumer reports and internet forums for the specific car you are looking at. Be sure to know the engine and transmission type. Some cars have specific issues with just one optional component and it may or may not be applicable to the car you are interested in.
