Question by renailer: Spark plugs wires need to be replaced on “as is” car. What would you do?
I bought a used car last week from a dealership that my parents have always taken their cars too. I didn’t have it checked out by a third party (please no lectures) partially because we always use that dealership for our cars. There were a few little things (loose fuse, air conditioner was “low”) that I noticed when I checked out the car. At the time, the sales manager said those things could be written into the contract that they would be fixed even though the car was bought “as is”. I took the car home that day without those things being fixed and brought it back a few days later. Six days later, I had driven the car only back and forth to the dealership and to work (less than 5 miles away) for a total of less than 30 miles, when the “check engine” light went on.

I took it back to the dealer, but they couldn’t look at it for a few days. Turns out the spark plug wires need to be replaced and the engine was misfiring. They told me it would be $ 375. I talked to the sales manager and he said it was normal wear-and-tear and wouldn’t pay for anything because it was sold “as is”.

I understand that I don’t have much legal recourse because I bought the car “as is.” I’m not going to give my business to this dealership anymore than I have to and have picked it up to take it somewhere else. However, I feel that this is bad business and would like to complain. I have talked to the used sales manager and called the general manager, but what else would you do? Do I have any recourse for either having them pay for repairs of things that should have been checked out beforehand or simply exposing the shady business?

Go to NAPA or Advance Auto or Autozone and buy a set of spark plug wires. Itll cost you $ 50 tops. They are very easy to install and the dealer is essentially bending you over if they are charging $ 375 and only doing wires. Take the car back and fix it yourself and hope that they know what they are talking about that thats the problem.

Question by ~amber~: License Plates are suspended, can i sale the vehicle..?
OKay, I got a no insurance coverage ticket, so i lost my license for 3 months and they suspended my plates. 3months later i payed to get my license back (paid off the fines and so on and so on) the only issue i failed to do was reinstate the plates (i wasnt conscious at the time that i had to) so i got arrested for driving on suspended plates, so i went to court and payed to reinstate them, and just got a letter in the mail saying the suspended my plates for another four months due to driving on suspended plates (ironic, i know) anyways my query is, can i “sale” the automobile to my dad and have him put plates on it in his name..and insurance coverage..whatever.. and then drive the vehicle??

My guess is no, if its got suspended plates, most probably you wont be in a position to register it, until the suspended plate sentence is over. Go purchase a super inexpensive beater automobile, have your dad register it, and drive that till your suspension is more than.

Question by Gene H: I’m thinking of buying a 2nd vehicle, a “summer car”. Should I buy a Porsche Boxster or a Mini Cooper?
Insurance is not a factor, neither is garage space. Not looking to buy a new vehicle and keeping the price below $ 15,000. I’m looking for something better on gas, since I drive a 4×4 most of the time now.

Neither, buy American. I’ sure you have noticed the changes in the cost of items ranging from food to property tax. Well if you have ever complained about this, or wondered why prices were going though the ceiling, it has partly to do with the fact that nobody is buying American products. This leads to America producing less products, and a shrinking economy. There are other factors at play, but if every American bought and American car the economy would be in much better shape.
My suggestion is buy American, the specific cars are not important. The related industries such as steel and rubber could use a resurgence. Since the late 80′s the American economy is moved further and further from industry and more towards being service based. Yeah I know for years we have produced inferior automobiles for top dollar, but we need to look past this if we want to have the same kind of future that we have grown accustom to in our past. American
automakers do not deserves this loyalty, however, the country desperately needs it. Now with that said, I am not advocating business as usual, I believe those in charge of the respective auto giants need to be held accountable for their overall poor business acumen, but the industry as a whole needs the American people as much as we need it. So despite the fact that foreign autos are of a better quality and cheaper rate, consider the increased price an investment in your future.
