When Does The "New Model Year" Effect The Prices of Used Cars ?

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The automotive model year officially changes like on 10-1 or thereabouts, if I recall correctly.

However, prior to that, info about the new models is available.

At some time during the year, the price of all cars (with certain exceptions) drops a notch – demand for the ‘expiring’ year drops off as people will wait a little while for the new one. That trickles down and at that point, every prior model year drops down a notch.

That effect is wayyy big if there is a significant change in the new model.

So, the question is:

When does this dropping-a-notch in price happen – practically speaking ?

BTW – I am not going to buy a new car – so i don’t need any info on the strategies involved w them.

For cars/trucks that are a few years old, when will their resale value take some amount of a hit due to the impending release of the new model ?

Many cars start getting majorly marked down in late June/early July. I would suspect that the best deals (if the buyer isn’t partial to any color/specs) are to be had in August, since dealerships need to clear out for new inventory.

What is the best used or new car to buy and how much?

Friday, December 25th, 2009

I need another car, I have searched the net but all car websites will have you believe that their cars are the best. I think I will get a used car, since you can get more for your money. And the past I have had two brand new cars, but I think I’ll go used this time around, 2004 and above. I’m thinking about a van or truck this go around. What do you think is better a car or van/truck. What brand is the best family vehicle? Have you had any problems with a certain brand vehicle?

man i can’t belive some of these answers. you are wise in not buying new. let someone else take the huge depreciation hit. I personally buy what your looking at 2-3 low mileage cars. You have to deside what you will be using the car for. Then how long you will keep it. The if you want a car or a "hey look at what I drive status symbol" Cars are made to get people from point a to point b. I have bought and sold thousands of cars and trucks over the years. I think last time I looked it was pushing a million vehicles. We are in the business to advise companies on current vehicles and the lowest cost per mile. Why do you want a van or a truck? Have something to haul?
The best basic transportation is a used Ford taurus. they are cheep to buy used, cheep to fix, very safe, and just a little bit less reliable as toyota or honda and cost a ton less. In a mini van the Chrysler line will give you the best bang for your buck. They also cheep to fix, hold their value and can be had for 4-5 G less then honda and toyota. They have nicer features the the Honda and toyota, ride and handle better and crash better then honda or toyota so insurance is less. If you want a full size truck The Ford E150 van or the F150 pick up. The others out their , no matter whos just pretend to be trucks. You have to know trucks like we do to tell we see what should not break do so on the others. all the others. From frames bending to beds bending or tailgates falling off. Deside what you need to use it for before you buy a truck. Gas mileage is horrible on all of them. I happen to like the New ford escape hybrid as all around vehicle. People who have them love them, few minor problems, gas mileage is in the 30’s and its all wheel drive.

For Sale By Owner: Cars And Trucks

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Selling your car or truck? It’s important to keep in mind that prospective used car buyers evaluate the person selling the care almost as much, if not more, than they examine the car itself. In order to win their interest and their trust it is crucial that you should make a good impression. Wherever possible possible, strive make your prospective customers feel comfortable and be open in your response to their inquiries.

Be ready to answer their questions as soon as prospective buyers start calling. Answer questions posed over the phone honestly in an effort to prepare callers for what to expect when they see the car. This works to save both you and the customer a lot of time and work by making only those appointments that have a reasonable chance of becoming a sale. Furthermore, strive to make appointments with each customer for a specific time, rather than leaving them to some vague time such as “after work”, or “Saturday afternoon”.

Remember that making an appointment when selling a car increases the chances of the buyers showing up. Don’t feel obligated to wait for a late customer. To help things go smoothly, request a contact number (preferably a cell phone) and take it in stride if some prospective buyers don’t show. Cancellations, with or without notice, are simply part of the process.

It should be expected that any potential buyer will ask to test-drive the car. Ride along with them so you can answer questions, as well as ensure the safety of the automobile. There is also the possibility that the customer may not be familiar with the area, so riding along with them allows you to serve as a guide.

Some of the buyers are likely to want to have the car inspected by a mechanic. If a mechanic has already checked it, this is the right time to show that paperwork. This is a reasonable request in any transaction such as buying or selling a car.

Protect Yourself

It is important to be cautious and to take steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your interests. For example, holding onto a buyer’s driver’s license is a reasonable safeguard if a buyer insists on going on a test-drive by his or herself. If the buyer has a problem with this arrangement there’s a very good chance that allowing an unsupervised test-drive would go against your best interests. On the other hand, it’s not unreasonable for a buyer to want the car checked by a different mechanic if it has already been checked by yours. Be prepared to go with the flow a little bit, and you are more likely to get a sale.

What are the little circles on the rear bumper of new cars?

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

I’ve noticed a lot of new cars and trucks have these small circles (about a half inch in diameter) on the rear bumper.

I’m curious what they are. Are they sensors for airbags or mounting bolts or something?

They are reverse sensors that alert the driver when the car is getting too close to another object. I wish more pick-ups and suv’s had them.

How much are new cars marked up from dealerships?

Friday, November 13th, 2009

My boyfriend works at one and I’m just wondering (he’s not too sure, he just takes the $ they give him). **Dealerships have their markups but used cars are a much better profit because he gets around 40% comm**. So with new cars the dealership buys them from Dodge etc, and resells them an barely makes $. How much do you think they mark it up?

My boyfriend makes 20% regardless and I’m just wondering if anyone knows the appx markup value to the MSRP.

Mark-ups are different depending on the company. A general rule of thumb is 12-15% This can vary alot. edmunds.com has invoice prices for new cars – but make sure to include every equipment package and option before he accuses his work of screwing him! Some vehicles by the way have VERY SMALL profit margins so even if he sells those at full price, there isn’t much in it for him. Most base model entry level cars and light trucks fall in this category.
