Question by hatwoc: How is the label of “a drivable car” used typically on craigslist?
As I’m moving to a different city, I’d like to get rid of my car. My car 1993 Ford Escort, 3-door hathback, is still drivable because I do drive it every day. But, it has some problems – major and minor – namely, side brake almost broken, weak transmission, and other miscellaneous internal problems (minor though). Exterior-wise, there is a bump on the side from hitting deer, driver side’s door (lock hole) doesn’t work, back mirror is torn apart, and side mirror’s smashed. I believe it’s drivable with some repair (brake and transmission). But, I’m not sure, ethically, if I should sell my car to someone as a “drivable car” I do not want to mislead anyone… What do you think??

Hi. My name is Johnny. I happen to reside in Buffalo NY, which we all know to be the snow capital of the world. I wrote this article simply to point out how purchasing a new car can really suck, or in my case it can be extremely inspirational. I’ve told this story several times. I hope you enjoy it.

The middle of January in Buffalo can be brutal, especially if you don’t have proper transpo. It had to be the coldest day of the winter, and I’m on my way to work, running late as usual. I’m driving a 1999 Ford contour, which had its share of problems (transmission, electrical, donut for a tire, you get the picture). I take the expressway to work everyday and in my case, I NEED that expressway. Just as I was about to merge onto the interstate the car stalls out. Now keep in mind, it’s morning rush hour, and I’m stuck off to the side of the road, but still actually in the exit (merge) lane. I called a towing service and let them know I needed a tow. Two hours later I’m still waiting in the car, freezing my you know what off, with no sign of a tow truck. Did I tell you that I also called a cab two hours ago? No cab. Finally my father in law comes to get me, but not before another hour goes by.

I get home and start brainstorming with my wife about how to fix our dire situation. We needed a car so I could get to work. Not to mention I have a small child at home. We knew we had to go and look for a new vehicle, but how would we get to a dealership? Most of the people in our circle didn’t even have reliable transportation!

So my wife called a few places, but one place in particular, whose name will remain anonymous, was truly a god-send. They were located in Grand Island, which was about 30 miles or so from my house. We explained to them that we had no way to get out there because our car was stranded on an expressway and on its way being towed. So they sent one of their luxury vans all the way to my house and brought us out there! Wow! I thought that was pretty cool. We get there and meet with the guy my wife spoke with. (Now just as a side note, mine and the wife’s credit sucked, really sucked. Back to my story) so basically we went out there with no money & bad credit. Not a good combo. Once the guy ran some numbers he showed us two SUV’s, which was what we wanted. One was a Chevy Trailblazer. It was ok but I really didn’t want to get something I’ve seen everyone and their mother driving. Then he showed us a Mitsubishi Endeavor. It was sharp. It was different than any other SUV that I’d seen. All black which I love. My wife loved it too. I could go and on and on but I won’t. Needless to say, we had made our choice.

We get back to the table to discuss payments, and I let the guy know that I had no money to put down. I could get the money, but I wasn’t going to have any for the next couple of weeks. He talked to his manager for about 10 minutes. He came back and let us know that I can write him a post dated check for ,000 and I could take the truck home that night. They would even pick up the Taurus that had been towed and use it as trade in.

My jaw dropped.

This was no bootlegged dealership either. This was a very reputable establishment. Wow. Now I’m a believer in everything happens for a reason.
