Question by Tim T: Buying a new car has changed — How do you negotiate now?
I’ve gone to a couple of dealerships and have tried contacting dealers over the Internet. All of the prices I’m getting from all of these locations are within $ 100 of each other. Nobody is willing to negotiate. I recall the days when you could really “wheel and deal” on cars, getting some good discounts if you were willing to haggle.

Are the days of haggling over? Or is there a new rulebook that I should follow to get a better deal?

the prices have gotten so low to the cost now that there isnt a lot of room, aside from end of year clearances. the best deals I have gotten are into the next year when last year’s models are still rotting on lots halfway through the current year’s production cycle. slim picking then though…btu you an get a good deal. otherwise, family memebers have used carsdirect.com. my dad saved some money there. there are other car selling sites as well. good luck!

you shouldn’t have a hard time selling it for that amount,if it was close to Tennessee, i would probably buy it,but i bought one already this week to re-sale.try running an add in your local auto trader for it,it will bring that much real easy,those are good cars,and that one with low miles on it should sell good,id ask more than that for it though ,that’s a little cheap for a good car now days,good luck with it.

Question by Tamil: How can I cancel my request or bid of “Name your Price” for Car rentals in PRICELINE.COM ?
Say I named my own price for renting a car (a minivan) for like $ 40 a day, in priceline.com, Would I be able to cancel my request ?
Say, I didn’t get the confirmation of the price after a day or so, whether my price got accepted or not, Can I go ahead and contact them to cancel / disregard my request ?

Please let me know your suggestions / experience, on how to proceed about.

I read through the terms and conditions on priceline for “name your own price”… they state:

“Additional Restrictions. In addition, the following restrictions will apply to rental car Requests made using our Name Your Own Price® service:

If priceline.com finds a rental car company willing to accept your Request, priceline.com will immediately charge your method of payment the total cost of the rental transaction including applicable Taxes and Service Fees (see above);

Priceline.com rental car reservations are non-changeable, non-endorsable, non-transferable and non-refundable; ”

You may try and contact them to request a cancel : Their terms and conditions also stated:

“We may, on an exception basis and at the request of the customer, waive the restrictions identified above after the rental has been reserved. We may, in our discretion, impose additional obligations and/or fees in connection with any such waiver. No User waiver requests will be accepted or considered prior to or as part of a priceline.com Request.”

There is a line at the very top of the priceline.com page with the following links:

If you click on the Check Your Request Link, you can check the status of your request, and there is also a link there, to contact priceline.

Query by homebrew: Can I get title to an abandoned automobile with a Florida plate?
I reside in NY state, and have had a auto parked on the lawn for 4 years now. It was final registered in Florida. I have permission from the owner to preserve the vehicle, however that individual now lives in England and is not interested in helping with locating a title, or transferring it. Is it possible to get the title to this auto? Florida DMV does not do “lein sales”, like some states. The auto is a 1997 Ford.
OK, I’ve done some a lot more analysis. I looked up the VIN# by way of the Florida DMV web site. There is a lein holder listed, although I do not know if it is latest. What if I get in touch with the lein holder and try out to get the title by means of them? If there is any cash owed on the auto, will they try out and get it from me?

It could be allot of work but without a title a salvage yard will not take it very good luck.

If the lien holder still has the title there is still a lien on the vehicle. If thats the case the ideal thing you can do is make contact with the lien holder and let them come get the auto off your lawn. Most most likely the amount of the loan is more than what the auto is really worth anyway. The earlier owner did not very own the auto and can not legally give it to you.

Question by Topsail: Trying to trade my car and dealer is using “auction” value!?
I’m trying to deal for a new car and have a great 2004 to trade in. I like to trade just so I don’t have to go through the hassle of selling it myself.

So Edmund’s says $ 18,000 for “trade-in” value of my car but the Toyota dealer says $ 15,000 for “auction value” is all they’ll give “because they lose money” paying “trade-in” value. Also, they’re not getting close to cutting enough on the new car…according to Edmund’s (and Kelly is close), these guys would make $ 3K on the trade for my old car plus $ 2,800 for the new car for a profit of $ 5,800!!! Usually, I get a new car for $ 300-500 profit for the whole deal–I figure the dealer can’t stay in business for zero profit but I don’t like to get clobbered either.

Well I walked after seeing the sales manager–I said there wasn’t any basis for discussion–also told them that lots of Toyota dealers out there. They’ve been calling me every other day since then.

So has anyone heard of this “auction” value? I don’t think its legitimate.

Ok, this is a typical Toyota dealer tactic. I believe what they meant by “auction” value is actually referred to as “wholesale” value. Toyota dealers have been getting very edgy with the public lately because they can (everyone wants a Corolla, Camry or Prius apparently). They understand that they will sell vehicles, if not to you, to someone else. This gives them the confidence to hammer the value of your trade, and still get you to buy a car. The only way to fight this is to aggressively cut their asking price of the vehicle you want. That way, it’s aleast a 50/50 battle. Good Luck and try another brand.

My auto dealer removed my new car window sticker and "lost it" and continues to say a duplicate will be obtained but it never happens and my calls are now ignored. I understand a new car window sticker guarantee is upheld by law referencing the: Automobile Information Disclosure Act of 1958, after which the sticker became known as a Monroney sticker in the industry, named after Almer Stillwell "Mike" Monroney, United States Senator from Oklahoma. What recourse am I privy to?

The act prohibits removal of the sticker BEFORE sale, it doesn’t stipulate it has to be left on, or given with, once the vehicle is sold.
If you wanted the sticker you probably should have taken it with you, it would have been easier.

Thoroughly clean the inside, wash and detail the outside, tires, and rims. The auto parts stores sell an engine wash that can be sprayed on (cool engine of course) and washed off to de-oxidize the metals. It’s not worth putting too much time and money into a car that won’t bring top dollar anyway. Focus on the performance aspect when selling it. If everything is in good working order and it will easily pass inspection , you will get as much as is possible out of it. Mileage has a big impact on what others are willing to pay. Good records of periodic maintenance also help. Good Luck!

I used to ba a car salesman for 3 years and my pay structure in $AUD was as follows:

$525 debitable retainer ( if you sold nothing in a week then thats what you took home )

$175 per car PLUS

20% of the gross profit after the "lot" fee.

So here’s an example to help you understand better :

Lets say the dealer bought a car for $10000.

Add the "lot fee"- ususally $2500 ( this covers all the fixed expenses of the yard, full time staff wages, mechanics etc etc ).

Car now "owes dealer" $12500

Sticker price $14950

So, If I negotiate with the client and sell for $14500, there’s $2000 gross profit. Therefore I would receive:

$175 ( for selling the car )
$400 ( for maximising the profit )
$575 AUD total.

Remember, everytime you discount the car you are giving away 20 cents in every dollar. It was a great system, encouraging me and the dealer to make more money. If this wasn’t in place then you’d simply "give" away the cars, applying the maximum discount.

I was turning over an average of 15 cars ( all used ) per month so there is good money to be made but be warned – it’s a hard job, lots of hours, lots of time spend on your feet and a lot of "attitude" from clients. " I’m just looking " is a favourite – in other words car salesman – GO AWAY !!

Get over all that and with a passion for cars you should enjoy it.

Read Consumers Report Car Buying issue, excellent info on new and used cars. If u r going for a used car, subscribe to Carfax, there u get info on where the car came from, if ever in a reported collision, mileage, how many owners.etc. Cost is reasonable for 30 days of unlimited usage, all u need is the vin number of the vehicle u r interested in. A new car is ur decision in taste and preference, but Consumers Report test drives all vehicles and u get their data. They also have the frequency of repairs and problems with used cars.
