It’s something like trying to drive the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 on a roller-coaster, only there are no steel tracks to keep you from slithering off the pavement and ending up in a flaming heap of 540-horsepower Mustang.

You can’t even see where you’re going, really. Hard on it, the GT500′s rear tires begin spinning just as you can see nothing but sky in the windshield. You’re on top of the hump at the entrance to Infineon Raceway’s Turn 6, and as your stomach and both right-side tires go weightless, you start a long, long dive to the left, sliding sideways all the way down the hill and around the 180-degree corner.

The Shelby GT500 is so torqued up with the cornering force from the low-profile 19-inch tires and the drive from the supercharged V8 that you can practically hear the welds popping in the chassis. But something is different this time — palms are not slick with sweat, tires are not threatening to let go at the most inopportune moment and steering left in order to go right is a joy and not a reflex of self-preservation.

The 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 gets 2 mpg more on the EPA highway cycle this year. The Ford engineers are really proud of this. But every time we make another lap and slide down Turn 6, we have our doubts that fuel economy is what this car is about.

Serving Our Inner Adolescent
We’re behaving like adults as the Ford engineers tell us all about the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500, even as we hear a couple of the cars making shake-down runs on the quarter-mile strip at Infineon Raceway a few hundred feet away. And in many ways, the GT500 itself is trying to act more like an adult, casting aside the muscle-bound character of the 2007 Ford Shelby GT500.

As the Ford people tell us, they started with the limited-production 2008 Ford Shelby GT500KR, the exclusive (1,700 examples built) and revenue-enhancing (MSRP $79,995) Mustang produced last year. And aside from a few fewer Shelby badges (the KR had many to spare), the GT500 is like the KR in almost every way, except it’s built at the Mustang plant in Flat Rock, Michigan, rather than at the Shelby facility in Las Vegas.

You can tell as soon as you open the new GT500′s hood, complete with hot-air extractors. The supercharged and intercooled DOHC 5.4-liter V8 with its truck-style iron block is still in place, but now it carries a conical air filter in its own sealed cold-air box behind the left-side headlight, an innovation that increases airflow while resisting power-sapping heat soak. For the GT500, this new cold-air intake required the migration of the iconic Cobra badge on the grille from the left side to the right side.

Original Movie Interceptor

The original movie Interceptor began life as a standard 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe. In 1976, film makers Byron Kennedy and George Miller began pre-production on Mad Max, a futuristic police movie. For the film, they needed a vehicle to feature as the “Black on Black, Pursuit Special Police Interceptor’ – the sleek, mean and powerful high performance Police car of the Main Force Patrol.
Murray Smith was hired as part of the Mad Max crew and one of his tasks was to design and build the Interceptor. The project began with his acquisition of the XB Falcon, mentioned above, and with Peter Arcadipane, Ray Beckerley, and various others, proceeded to modify the car to film specifications. The key modification was the Concorde Show Van front end, roof and trunk spoilers, fender flares and the supercharger equipped with a Scott fuel injector hat ( which was for appearance only and non-functional ). The Concorde front was a fairly new accessory at the time, designed by Peter Arcadipane at Ford of Australia as a showpiece. The car also received quite a few other minor modifications to complete the package such as, an on/off blower switch, Max Rob steering wheel, interior blue police light, siren, and a custom roof mounted police radio. There was only ONE Black Interceptor ever built for the first Mad Max film.
Following the production of Mad Max, the car was no longer needed, and was modified once more to make it suitable for use as a standard road car (basically by removing the blower and the side pipes). It was then toured around Melbourne to shopping centers and car shows as part of the promotion done for the film. Following this promotional work, the car was put up for sale.
In the mean time, this low budget Australian film had gained worldwide success, prompting a sequel, Mad Max 2 or The Road Warrior, as it was released as in the US. The Black Interceptor was then reacquired by Kennedy-Miller Studios for use once more. The blower and side pipes were reinstalled, although different to the originals, along with changing the rear wheels. The car was further modified to fit the setting of the new film, with large gas tanks fitted in the trunk, it’s general appearance given a more used and stressed look and the front end was also modified by removing the bottom spoiler. In addition to modifying the original car, a duplicate car was built for Mad Max 2 for filming of driving sequences, while the original car was used for all the close ups and interior shots.
When the story eventually required the Black Interceptor to be destroyed in a spectacular crash and burn up sequence, the duplicate car was used, leaving the original more or less intact. However, it’s use for the filmmakers was over, and the car was collected by a used metal dealer from Broken Hill for scrap, along with several other vehicles from the film. Although it was supposed to be scrapped, the new ‘owner’ was reluctant to destroy this important car, and it was ultimately passed on to a colleague, Ray Evans, from Adelaide. The car then sat outside Ray Evans’ junk yard for more than three years, and was the subject of much interest. After negotiations, Bob Forsenko, a fan of this film series, purchased the Interceptor and sent it to Franklin Side Crash Restorers where Tony and Mario Romeo restored it to it’s original glory however, retaining the tanks fitted in the sequel. Eventually Forsenko contacted Murray Smith, and confirmed that this was, in fact, the original car which Murray built for Kennedy-Miller studios.
In 1993, Forsenko sold the Interceptor to Dr. Peter Nelson, the director, curator and owner of the ‘Cars of the Stars Motor Museum’ in Keswick, England, where it now resides with other famous film and TV cars.

The owner of the cars was a car dealer in the 1970s and 1980s, and decided to save the more interesting cars that came through his doors. When the barn was full, he padlocked and “soldered” the doors shut. (Perhaps welding was too permanent.)

Web sites varied on the number of cars: 58, 100, and 180 were speculated. According to Morais, there are 180 cars in the barn.
Cotter’s research indicates that the cars are probably located in an area near Lisbon, in Portugal.

Thus, it seems that the “retired New Yorker” cover story is no more than a fictional embellishment. The story may have evolved out of an earlier description of the photographs that simply asked recipients to imagine what it would be like to acquire a piece of land and then subsequently discover a treasure trove of old cars hidden in a barn on the property

I am looking to buy a new car I would like a car around 20-25K that is either fast stock or can easily be upgraded. I would prefer something that is not 4 cylinder and something that takes turns well.

I don’t see why you are ruling out 4 cylinders…that really rules out one of the best cars there is….

Subaru Impreza WRX…230 HP stock and weighing only 3000 lbs, 5 point double wishbone suspension, sport tuned, AWD.

0-60 in just over 5 seconds.

For a little more you can get the STI which is also a 4 cylinder, and yet it still has 300 HP stock and goes 0-60 in 4.8 seconds.

Easily upgradeable, i’ve met people with STI’s and Evo’s approaching 1000 HP (there is a guy in my city who has an EVO that dyno’s out at 916 HP…still using the stock 2 liter 4 cylinder engine…of course he is filthy rich and has dumped almost twice the cars value on mods).

You really will not get any faster than the WRX for that much money. The STI is in the mid to high $30,000 depending on if you choose all the extras or not. The WRX is 27k, so closer to your price range and fast as hell and turns way better than any Mustang or Charger…

O ya the Charger has a huge engine compared to the WRX and more HP, but yet the WRX still goes 0-60 faster than the Charger (faster by about 1.3 seconds).
