Unlike the actual film car, which had a non-operational supercharger system, this replica has both a functional 6-71 Blower & Scott EFI unit, atop a 351 Cleveland specifically designed for supercharger application from Pat Musi Performance in New Jersey. Vehicle is located in New York.
Second car is a genuine Boss 351 Mustang, 1 of 1806 ever manufactured…
More about the Interceptor/Pursuit Special can be found at madmaxmovies.com
Original Movie Interceptor
The original movie Interceptor began life as a standard 1973 XB GT Ford Falcon Coupe. In 1976, film makers Byron Kennedy and George Miller began pre-production on Mad Max, a futuristic police movie. For the film, they needed a vehicle to feature as the “Black on Black, Pursuit Special Police Interceptor’ – the sleek, mean and powerful high performance Police car of the Main Force Patrol.
Murray Smith was hired as part of the Mad Max crew and one of his tasks was to design and build the Interceptor. The project began with his acquisition of the XB Falcon, mentioned above, and with Peter Arcadipane, Ray Beckerley, and various others, proceeded to modify the car to film specifications. The key modification was the Concorde Show Van front end, roof and trunk spoilers, fender flares and the supercharger equipped with a Scott fuel injector hat ( which was for appearance only and non-functional ). The Concorde front was a fairly new accessory at the time, designed by Peter Arcadipane at Ford of Australia as a showpiece. The car also received quite a few other minor modifications to complete the package such as, an on/off blower switch, Max Rob steering wheel, interior blue police light, siren, and a custom roof mounted police radio. There was only ONE Black Interceptor ever built for the first Mad Max film.
Following the production of Mad Max, the car was no longer needed, and was modified once more to make it suitable for use as a standard road car (basically by removing the blower and the side pipes). It was then toured around Melbourne to shopping centers and car shows as part of the promotion done for the film. Following this promotional work, the car was put up for sale.
In the mean time, this low budget Australian film had gained worldwide success, prompting a sequel, Mad Max 2 or The Road Warrior, as it was released as in the US. The Black Interceptor was then reacquired by Kennedy-Miller Studios for use once more. The blower and side pipes were reinstalled, although different to the originals, along with changing the rear wheels. The car was further modified to fit the setting of the new film, with large gas tanks fitted in the trunk, it’s general appearance given a more used and stressed look and the front end was also modified by removing the bottom spoiler. In addition to modifying the original car, a duplicate car was built for Mad Max 2 for filming of driving sequences, while the original car was used for all the close ups and interior shots.
When the story eventually required the Black Interceptor to be destroyed in a spectacular crash and burn up sequence, the duplicate car was used, leaving the original more or less intact. However, it’s use for the filmmakers was over, and the car was collected by a used metal dealer from Broken Hill for scrap, along with several other vehicles from the film. Although it was supposed to be scrapped, the new ‘owner’ was reluctant to destroy this important car, and it was ultimately passed on to a colleague, Ray Evans, from Adelaide. The car then sat outside Ray Evans’ junk yard for more than three years, and was the subject of much interest. After negotiations, Bob Forsenko, a fan of this film series, purchased the Interceptor and sent it to Franklin Side Crash Restorers where Tony and Mario Romeo restored it to it’s original glory however, retaining the tanks fitted in the sequel. Eventually Forsenko contacted Murray Smith, and confirmed that this was, in fact, the original car which Murray built for Kennedy-Miller studios.
In 1993, Forsenko sold the Interceptor to Dr. Peter Nelson, the director, curator and owner of the ‘Cars of the Stars Motor Museum’ in Keswick, England, where it now resides with other famous film and TV cars.

Japan Car – now on exhibit at the London Science Museum is not your average automobile show. Spectators should be prepared for an innovative encounter with the future of lifestyle and transport.
When their proposal for a design museum in Tokyo was turned down, architect Shigeru Ban and designer Kenya Hara came up with the idea of a yearly show which would change in theme and location.
The exhibit Japan Car is a fresh statement of how the Japanese consider the interior of the vehicle as a living space.
[Shigeru Ban, Architect and Show Creator]:
“Cars in Europe are designed as pure transportation means to go from one place to one place as quickly as possible. Instead, we just try to enjoy inside so that is the very different aspect of how car inside, also the space itself and design as a reflection of lifestyle.”
The Toyota Bb, for example, was designed as a private hideout with an 11-speaker sound system and front seat cushions that can be lowered out of sight from outside viewers.
Proving that good things come in small packages, Japanese car manufacturers are also paying attention to environment with climate-conscious hybrids that are more like integrated systems than individual cells.
Shigeru says that efficient public transportation in Japan is driving car sales down and that carmakers need to come up with special cars to meet the challenge.
[Shigeru Ban, Architect and Show Creator]:
“I think it’s a very important moment for Japanese manufacturers. The competition is much stronger and also the design of the car is the same everywhere so this character and also the globalization of many different car companies in different countries working together, but unless we have some
special character, I think it’s very difficult to progress further.”
Using shoes as an analogy, Shigeru says of the future, “The car is becoming more like shoes, depending on the occasion, they use different types of cars.”

WOLFSBURG, Germany — Volkswagen will use the 2008 Paris Auto Show as a launch pad for its new sixth-generation 2010 Golf GTI. The new performance-based hatchback follows closely on the heels of the standard sixth-generation Golf, which is also due to get its first public debut in the French capital next week and then go on sale in Europe.
Both cars are planned to go on sale simultaneously in North America in October 2009. The GTI is part of an intensive new-model thrust aimed at netting Volkswagen significant sales growth. The automaker’s ambitious 10-year business plan aims to achieve 800,000 sales per year in the U.S. by 2018.
The Golf GTI to be revealed in Paris is described as a concept. Sources at Volkswagen’s Wolfsburg headquarters tell Inside Line it is highly representative of the production version that is due to reach European showrooms next April. It’s an unwritten law among German carmakers that any car displayed more than six months prior to market introduction is billed as a concept — or studie, as Volkswagen prefers.
Powering the latest incarnation of the GTI is VW’s new EA888 four-cylinder engine in turbocharged 2.0-liter form. Developed by Audi as part of a world engine program, the transversely mounted unit kicks out 210 horsepower, which is 10 hp more than the current GTI. Torque, however, remains the same, rising to a peak of 206 pound-feet at just 1,800 rpm.
As before, drive goes to the front wheels via either a standard six-speed manual or an optional six-speed double-clutch gearbox that has steering-wheel-mounted paddles and a full automatic mode.
The 2010 GTI gets an electronic differential for the first time, called XDS, that operates through an enhanced electronic stability program to help power get to the road cleanly and efficiently.
Volkswagen claims the new car will sprint from zero to 60 mph in under 7.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 149 mph. Combined fuel consumption averages better than 30 mpg on the European cycle. CO2 emissions, on which some European markets base road tax, have dropped to 178g/km.
The underpinnings are a development of those used in the old GTI with a combination of MacPherson struts at the front and multilinks at the rear. It sits 0.8 inch closer to the ground than the standard Golf and rolls on unique 18-inch wheels shod with 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport tires.
The new GTI also gets adaptive damping as on the Scirocco. Known under the name DCC (dynamic chassis control), it provides three levels of suspension stiffness: normal, comfort and sport. The system also alters mapping of the steering and throttle for sharper and more immediate responses in sport mode.
The GTI will be available in three- and five-door body styles and gets a distinctive body kit. Visual cues include a deep new front bumper with gaping central air duct and vertically stacked foglamps, as well as an altered grille with classic GTI touches. All are design elements that first emerged on the wild midengine W12 650 concept car. Other changes include wider sills underneath the doors, a prominent spoiler atop the hatch and a new rear bumper carrying an altered valance cover bookmarked by twin chromed tailpipes.
The sporty theme continues inside with the traditional checkered cloth seats, unique dashboard trim, leather-hooded gearlever and aluminum-finish pedals. The classy instrument graphics and three-spoke multifunction flat-bottom steering wheel are shared with the recently introduced Passat CC and add some upmarket flair. The rest of the cabin is brought over from the standard Golf, including the extensive options list with such high-end items as radar-controlled collision avoidance, a touchscreen navigation system supported by a 30GB hard disk, reverse-view camera and parallel parking assistant.
The GTI is not likely to be the last of the hot Golfs headed to North America. Volkswagen is also said to be preparing another new model with an upgraded version of its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with Audi’s new valve lift system as a possible replacement for the four-wheel-drive 250-hp 3.2-liter V6-powered R32. The new engine, which is also found in the Audi S3, delivers 265 hp — enough to give the new Golf real kick, as one Volkswagen insider enthuses.
