Buy a New Car at Internet Pricing!

Do you think new cars are way over priced?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I mean, I think of how many new cars are probably made and even sold in one day, and sometimes I wonder if we’re being way overcharged for new cars. What do you think? Does it really cost them $20,000 +++ to build them?

I don’t think cars are overpriced, if by that you mean they have an artificially high, inflated profit margin. Too many car manufacturers (domestic and import) are not profitable for that to be the case. In addition to the basic manufacturing costs of a car, you’ve got to consider development costs, marketing, warranty claims, and everything else that adds overhead. I think it’s more a case that people just spend too much on them.

If you just want basic transportation to get you from point A to point B, you can get still get a brand new compact car with power windows/locks and AC for around $15k.

But people have demonstrated they’re more than willing to spend $25k+ for bigger, heavier cars with bigger engines and all kinds of optional luxury conveniences (moonroofs, large alloy wheels, premium stereos, leather seating, power seats, etc). Heck, people will spend $35k+ just to get a "luxury" version of a car that already has these accessories!

will adding a new sunroof and navigation system to a new car void the warranty?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I am planning of putting a new sunroof and navigation system to my new altima 08, but will adding these features from a aftermarket void my warranty, or will the dealership tell me something if i do. I dont know anything about what they do if i put those feature in the car. Please help. I would really appreciate your answers.

A reputable after market shop can put in a sunroof with no warranty conflicts; also, the sunroof should be warranteed by the supplier. If you’re going to use a nav system that simply plugs into the lighter outlet, there are no problems with your factory warranty on the car. All you’re doing is using the 12 volt power supply.

CAR SALESMEN…be honest…how much do you make (commission or otherwise) on the average NEW CAR sale?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

One salesman told me he makes $100 per vehicle he sells. Is this accurate? I know it’ll vary from location to location, and dealer to dealer, but the AVERAGE?

On a new car on average bout $250 add on’s extended warranty’s etc that is where big $$ is made and the salesman doesn’t see that.

Used cars are much better more profit can be made,Pay $2000 for a trade in and resale it for $8000 (done every day) the dealership takes out prep charges and service and and and then the salesman get a % of profit made. Then commission could be in the $500 to $800 range depends .

When I was a green pea (new salesman) I got $150 per sale no matter what the profit was… with a Base of $1500 a month (6 days a week 12 hour days) when I went straight commission I averaged bout $300 per car sold 12 to 16 cars a month. Most average salesperson will make $25k a year starting out and get up to $40k after a few years. BUT at a good dealership and with large amount of UP’s (customers) the average sales person will make $60 to 80K some will make over $100k but you have to have large volume of customers and sell 30 cars a month. That’s hard I have HEARD some sales people selling over 100 cars a month … never seen it…..

Buying a new car: "cost to change" query?

Friday, February 12th, 2010

I’m planning on part exchanging a 2 year old Mercedes (yep, because of fuel cost!) for a cheaper, more economical model.

Can anyone advise if franchised dealers have a minimum "cost to change" figure when taking a part exchange in return for a new car sale?

The differential between my current car and the one I want will be about £800 – £1200 and I wondered if dealers will just want to see more cash out of the deal in order to be interested. Thanks

Generally, yes, especially for your model.

The risk they have is of buying in a car which will be slow to sell and depreciate in value whilst sitting on their forecourt. At the moment, good mpg cars are selling like hotcakes and low mpg models are plummeting in value and are slow to move without heavy discounting.

With a model such as yours, a buyer would also expect the car to be retailed on a virtually "as new" basis, so the dealer would have to service the car and prepare it to the highest standards and then provide a warranty comparable to a new car. All of these things cost the dealer a lot of up-front money.

To try and offset these issues, the dealer has to offer you the absolute minimum possible and currently it’s often below what current printed and online price guides are indicating. The dealer also knows that fuel-efficient cars are selling very strongly at the moment so not only have the windscreen prices gone up but the dealer also has less incentive to offer a discounted price.

Your cost to change will therefore likely be somewhat higher than you planned.

Guide to Financing a Used Car

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

So, you’re contemplating purchasing a used car?  Whether the dealership calls it a pre-owned vehicle, a used car or a “new to you” vehicle, it amounts to the same thing.  These can be fantastic deals, giving you a needed vehicle, without the depreciation that strikes a new car the second you drive it off the lot.  However, now that you have decided to look at what’s for sale, you’ll need to know a bit about financing options.  For instance, how long can you finance a used car?  Is an extended warranty included in the financing?

When choosing financing for a used car, there are several things that you must look for, prior to making any decision (whether on the car or the financing option).  First, is the car worth financing?  Obviously, the car has some value, or the dealership would not be selling it, but will it hold its value throughout the loan?  To determine this, you’ll need to consider the brand of the vehicle, as well as how many miles it currently has on the engine.  There are other factors in the equation as well, but many of those are out of your control, such as the state of the auto market when the loan is finally paid off.

Another area of concern when financing a used car is the extended warranty.  Many used cars have the remnants of a manufacturer’s warranty on them, depending on the make and mileage on the car.  However, once that manufacturer’s warranty runs out, there will be no coverage offered, other than your insurance.  You can, however, add an extended warranty to the vehicle and tack the cost of the warranty onto the auto loan.  Of course, this will raise the monthly payments and increase the cost of the loan by a significant amount.  However, this can be a very smart decision to make.

Of course, there are many other considerations to make.  Most of these apply to financing a used car or a new car.  For instance, you will need to know your credit score prior to applying for financing.  You will also need a copy of your credit history, so that you know there will be no nasty surprises waiting for you in the financing office. Finally, you will need to know your monthly budget.  How much can you afford in monthly payments?  How long will it take you to pay off the vehicle with the minimum monthly payments?  Remember that the total cost of the car is just as important as the amount you have to pay each month.

As a final piece of advice, never expect to pay “blue book” value for a used car.  You will finance the vehicle for the price the dealership asks, minus whatever amount you are due from trade-ins, your down payment and tough negotiating skills.  Remember that almost every part of a car sale is negotiable, right down to the amount of interest charged on your auto loan.

What rights do you have when buying a brand new car?

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

I bought a new Audi TT two years ago that is already showing signs of rust. Audi have told me that are aware of the fault, and did infact recall some cars for this reason. However they will not replace my car, only repair it. Should i have to settle for a reapir when i have clearly been sold a faulty car?
They have offered to repair it for free…i dont want a repaired car though…..not when i paid £25k for it!
To the idiot that thinks i should be grateful to be able to have my car repaired……..you clearly either work for Audi or are just plain stupid. And for your infomation, I have a Vauxhall Vectra that is 5 years old, without any sign of rust…and that car was half the cost of this one. It is stupid people like you that make it so easy for large companies to rip people off.
It really does astound me that so many people seem to think that i should be GRATEFUL that the manufacturer are offering to repair a fault that they sold the car, knowing it would develop, and it is still within the three year warranty. People these days really must have low expectations when then spend thousands of pounds on something!

As someone said previously, the car has some body and paint issues, but the engine and all other components work fine, right? If that’s the case, I’d be happy with what they offered. They are under no obligation to replace a car that runs fine, and in fact probably could have made some claims about road conditions or some other crap that makes them not responsible for anything. I’d let them fix it, and if you still hate the car, sell it and buy something else. What they are offering seems perfectly normal to me, and in fact gives me a little more respect for Audi. A lot of other manufacturers would not have stepped up like that to fix a cosmetic problem.

How did my brand new car get an oil leak?

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

My car is an 05 Pontiac G6 Gt…. I dont know how in the world it could have an oil leak. I’ve never even had a car that had an oil leak… How is this possible to just get one??? Its covered under warranty so I dont have to pay for anything, its just weird. I’ve had 4 brand new cars, and this is the first one to ever have an oil leak. Its a great car overall, just never had this happen before.

It could just be sumthing as simple as a faulty gasket. When u think about how vehicles are massed produced sumthing simple could have been over looked.

Can a car sale be overturned when the seller have submitted the ownership release to DMV??

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I just sold a car. I submitted ownership release to DMV online last night, but the buyer said he found a mechanical problem and he wants his money back. It is clearly not my fault. Is there any way he can overturn the car sale??
this is in California

Used cars are sold as-is. Unless you specified a warranty the problem is now his. He had the opportunity to have it inspected at a shop or by a mechanic prior to ourchase. Tell him "no refunds". It is now his car.
